In a significant turn for African governance, Ousmane Sonko has made a high-profile return to the legislative branch. He was elected by the members of the Pastef party to lead the chamber, despite the growing friction between him and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, even though both belong to the same political movement.
The newly appointed head of the National Assembly received a standing ovation from his colleagues. His party currently dominates the house, holding 130 of the 165 available seats. Sonko steps into the role following the Sunday resignation of El Malick Ndiaye.
