During a high-stakes session at the National Assembly this Friday, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko delivered a resolute defense of the nation’s legislative stance on acts against nature. Addressing lawmakers during a scheduled question-and-answer period, the head of government underscored his administration’s commitment to enforcing stricter penalties with absolute impartiality.

Targeting the “big fish”

The Prime Minister made it clear that the judicial crackdown will not be limited to low-profile individuals. In a stern warning, Ousmane Sonko emphasized that even the most influential figures—whom he referred to as the “big fish”—will face the full force of the law. He stated that the ultimate objective of these measures is to entirely eliminate such practices within Sénégal, ensuring that justice is served regardless of an individual’s social or political standing.

A message of sovereignty to the West

Beyond domestic enforcement, the Prime Minister utilized the platform to address international concerns. In response to reservations expressed by several Western nations regarding the country’s legal direction, Ousmane Sonko maintained a staunchly sovereignist position. He declared that Sénégal would not accept external lectures on its internal affairs or moral legislation, reinforcing a policy of national independence that has defined his tenure since taking office.
