Ousmane Sonko challenges Senegal’s justice system over accountability delays

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has forcefully articulated his deep frustration regarding the handling of judicial cases related to public accountability during a recent inter-ministerial council meeting.

Reports from the session indicate that the head of government intervened following a presentation by Justice Minister Yassine Fall. He directly challenged her on the effectiveness of Senegal’s justice system in addressing alleged irregularities in public management.

The Prime Minister raised serious questions about the pace of legal proceedings and the perceived lack of judicial follow-up in numerous sensitive cases, pointing to a persistent sense of impunity. He highlighted that substantial public funds appear to have been misappropriated without visible, concrete judicial decisions, which, in his view, undermines the credibility of public action and African governance.

In his address, Ousmane Sonko emphasized the critical need to establish responsibility at all levels, encompassing both former and current administrative and political officials. He also drew attention to what he characterized as enduring dysfunctions within the judicial chain, suggesting a structural blockage in the processing of certain cases.

In response to these concerns, the Justice Minister affirmed that her department is actively working to advance ongoing legal procedures. She reiterated the commitment of judicial services to prosecute individuals involved when evidence permits, acknowledging existing institutional and operational constraints within the system.

However, the Prime Minister maintained his firm stance, urging for an acceleration of proceedings and greater transparency in the monitoring of these crucial cases. He underscored that robust public accountability is, in his estimation, a core pillar of the current administration’s mandate.

Concluding his intervention, Ousmane Sonko reaffirmed that these judicial matters are of paramount public interest and must be handled with utmost rigor and speed. This, he stressed, is essential to preserve citizen confidence in Senegal’s vital institutions and ensure effective African current affairs management.
