Ousmane Sonko faces legislative inquiry on national issues

The Prime Minister of Sénégal, Ousmane Sonko, recently appeared before the National Assembly to respond to various inquiries regarding the current state of the nation. This session provided a platform for the government to clarify its stance on social, economic, and judicial matters currently impacting the country.

Firm stance on social legislation

During the exchange with deputies, Ousmane Sonko addressed the topic of anti-homosexuality laws with significant resolve. He stated that if there is a perceived necessity to toughen existing legislation, the government will move forward with such reinforcements. Emphasizing national autonomy, he remarked that Sénégal does not require external interference or lessons regarding its societal choices and moral frameworks.

Economic updates and market stability

The session also featured contributions regarding the cost of living and market preparation for upcoming cultural milestones. Minister Serigne Guèye Diop offered insights into the preparations for Tabaski 2026, confirming that the market remains adequately supplied. Specifically, he noted that the price of onions has been stabilized at 4,500 FCFA. Furthermore, the Minister highlighted that government initiatives over the last three years have resulted in a cumulative price reduction of 869 billion FCFA, providing substantial relief to household budgets across the nation.

Governance and the accountability process

Regarding the ongoing efforts toward financial accountability and the process of “reddition des comptes,” Ousmane Sonko shared a candid perspective. He admitted to having occasional doubts and questions about the complexities of the proceedings, reflecting the challenges inherent in ensuring transparency in state management. The discussions also touched upon the intricacies of the national dialogue and the evolving political landscape at the highest levels of government.
