Ousmane Diagne has officially begun his duties as the new president of Senegal’s Constitutional Council following a solemn swearing-in ceremony held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The magistrate’s appointment was formalized by Presidential Decree No. 2026-1318, signed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on July 13, 2026. He now leads an institution that had remained vacant for over a year after the untimely passing of his predecessor, Mamadou Badio Camara, in Dakar on April 10, 2025.

Ousmane Diagne’s distinguished judicial career

With a career spanning decades within Senegal’s judiciary, Ousmane Diagne brings extensive experience to his new role. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Attorney General at the Dakar Court of Appeal, First Advocate General at the Supreme Court, and Public Prosecutor. His expertise also extended to the executive branch, where he held the position of Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals in the first government led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

His selection aligns with the constitutional requirements for the presidency of the Constitutional Council, which mandate that candidates must either have served as First President or Attorney General of the Supreme Court, President of a Chamber, or hold equivalent qualifications such as being tenured law professors, senior state inspectors, or senior attorneys with at least 20 years of practice.

The Constitutional Council plays a pivotal role in Senegal’s governance framework, tasked with upholding the Constitution, ensuring legal compliance, and overseeing the integrity of electoral processes. Its decisions carry significant weight in shaping the nation’s political landscape.
