Deadly ambush strikes military post in southeastern Niger

A coordinated assault on a military outpost near N’Guigmi claimed the lives of several soldiers, local sources confirmed. The attack, which unfolded on Friday morning, targeted positions overlooking the Lake Chad basin—a region long plagued by cross-border violence.

N’Guigmi: a hotspot of insecurity in the Diffa region

N’Guigmi, a garrison town in the Diffa region, has become a focal point for militant activity since Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), escalated operations in the area. The town’s strategic location along the Nigerian, Chadian, and Cameroonian borders has made it a battleground for extremist groups vying for control.

Casualties and aftermath of the attack

Residents and local officials reported that at least ten soldiers and four national guardsmen were killed during the ambush. While the Nigerien news agency did not disclose an official death toll, it acknowledged that the assault resulted in fatalities. The military has since launched clearance operations in the surrounding areas to dismantle remaining insurgent cells.
