Nice’s Ligue 1 playoff return to be played behind closed doors

The OGC Nice has expressed strong disapproval of the French Football Federation’s decision to uphold the ban on spectators for the critical Ligue 1 playoff rematch against Saint-Étienne.

The only notable aspect of the first leg between AS Saint-Étienne and OGC Nice was the away supporters’ presence. Yet even that will vanish this Friday at the Allianz Riviera for the decisive playoff return.

Following disturbances linked to the May 17 clash with Metz, the French Football Federation’s Appeals Committee has upheld the full stadium closure sanction against Nice.

What began as a two-match stadium ban, with one suspended, has now been adjusted to two complete closed-door fixtures and a suspended point deduction for the 2026/2027 season.

A measure deemed “particularly severe”

The club issued a statement lamenting what it called an “absurd” decision, highlighting its consistent cooperation with authorities and the praise it received from LFP delegates for its handling of the situation.

“Being forced to contest a potential season-defining playoff behind closed doors was already an extremely harsh punishment,” the statement read. “Depriving our supporters of such a pivotal moment is, in our view, an exceptionally severe measure—both athletically and emotionally.”

OGC Nice has announced plans to seek mediation through the French National Olympic and Sports Committee. Should this effort fail, the club will pursue legal recourse before the Administrative Court to challenge the decision.
