Nantes tucson match halted: toulouse claim ninth place in ligue 1

The French Football League (LFP) has officially closed the case on the abandoned match between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC (0-0) during the 34th and final matchday of Ligue 1. The game will not be replayed, and Toulouse climbs to ninth place in the standings—a result that benefits the Violets more than anticipated.

LFP’s decision and its impact

In a late announcement, the LFP confirmed the score at the moment of the match’s interruption (0-0) on May 27, rather than awarding Toulouse a 3-0 victory by default. This decision spared Nantes from a potential points deduction, while Toulouse secured their best-ever finish since RedBird Capital Partners took over the club.

The Violets now share 45 points with Lorient but edge ahead due to a superior goal difference (3 vs. -1). This ninth-place finish marks Toulouse’s highest-ever league position in the modern era, continuing their steady upward trajectory in recent seasons. Even a 3-0 forfeit would not have allowed them to surpass Strasbourg, who sit eighth with 53 points.

Sanctions following pitch invasions

The match was abandoned after Nantes supporters invaded the pitch, launching pyrotechnics onto the field. Dozens of masked ultras stormed the field in protest against the club’s relegation, overwhelming stewards. The LFP responded with sanctions against Nantes: one closed-door match and a two-match ban on the Loire stand, from which the pitch invasions originated.

Nantes will begin their Ligue 2 campaign without fan attendance in the Loire stand, though they avoided harsher penalties such as point deductions. The club can take solace in their ninth-place finish, a historic milestone for Toulouse.
