Nantes vs Toulouse match abandoned after pitch invasion forces early end
The final Ligue 1 fixture of the season at Stade de la Beaujoire was abandoned just 22 minutes in after fireworks and supporter invasions brought chaos to the field
The highly anticipated last-day clash between Nantes and Toulouse was halted indefinitely following a dramatic pitch invasion by home supporters shortly after kick-off. The match, tied at 0-0 at the time of interruption, was called off during a crisis meeting involving club officials, local authorities, and French football authorities.
The decisive decision came after supporters breached pitchside security, launching flares and projectiles that forced referee Stéphanie Frappart to halt proceedings. Both teams were ordered back to the dressing rooms as police reinforcements were deployed to regain control of the stands.
Olivier Chovaux, Ligue 1 delegate, announced that prefectural authorities had ruled the match could not resume due to safety concerns. «We witnessed a deliberate pitch invasion accompanied by pyrotechnic activity and object-throwing. This necessitated the withdrawal of officials and players to the locker rooms,» he stated during the post-incident press conference. «The prefect has decided to abandon the match permanently for security reasons,» Frappart confirmed nearly 40 minutes after the initial halt. The decision was met with jubilation from Nantes ultras in the stands before the stadium was fully evacuated.
Coach Vahid Halilhodzic was visibly distressed, remaining on the pitch-side area despite attempts by security personnel to restrain him as incensed supporters approached. The situation only stabilized after significant CRS (riot police) intervention secured the away section.
French sports minister condemns ‘unacceptable’ violence
Marina Ferrari, France’s Sports Minister, swiftly condemned the disturbances: «The scenes of violence that unfolded moments ago during the FC Nantes vs Toulouse FC match are completely unacceptable and have no place in sport or our Republic. I strongly condemn these acts while extending my full support to the players and supporters who attended peacefully. The prefect’s decision to abandon the match was necessary. Such incidents cannot be tolerated.
I commend the rapid response of stewards and law enforcement. Every stakeholder must take responsibility to identify those responsible for this violence, who will face severe penalties.»
With Nantes finishing 17th in the league, the abandonment means the club will be relegated to Ligue 2 for the upcoming season. The incident marks the second time in recent weeks that a Ligue 1 match has been abandoned due to supporter-related disturbances.
