Dakar mayor laments indiscipline after prime minister sonko’s early exit from patriotic walk

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko unexpectedly concluded his participation in a patriotic walking event on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The march, themed ‘the walk towards 2029,’ was orchestrated by Dakar’s Mayor, Abass Fall.

Eyewitness accounts from the scene indicated that the head of government found it impossible to proceed with the walk alongside other attendees due to significant crowd management issues and a palpable sense of disorder.

This unforeseen development drew sharp criticism from Mayor Abass Fall of Dakar, who publicly condemned the lack of discipline displayed by certain individuals among the participants. This situation has quickly become a topic of African current affairs.

Mayor Fall expressed his frustration, stating, ‘We face a genuine challenge here. It is unacceptable to invite a high authority to an event only for participants to exhibit such indiscipline. This is not how things should be. We gathered for a patriotic march, yet why can people not maintain order? Consequently, the Prime Minister had to depart early because of this situation.’

When pressed by a journalist regarding the evident affection militants showed towards Ousmane Sonko, Abass Fall offered a pointed response: ‘Affection must be tempered with intelligence. It requires wisdom. This truly presents a significant issue for African governance and public events across the continent. This Africa breaking news highlights the need for better organization in public gatherings.’
