Morocco secures nine key positions in african union governance

The Kingdom of Morocco has significantly bolstered its influence within the African Union (AU) by securing nine pivotal leadership roles across multiple strategic bodies. This move underscores the nation’s growing diplomatic clout and its commitment to shaping the continent’s future through enhanced institutional contributions.

Following extensive regional consultations across North Africa, Morocco has been entrusted with these responsibilities, positioning it as the leading North African nation in terms of negotiated responsibilities within the AU. This development arrives at a critical juncture as the African Union advances major initiatives spanning institutional reforms, financial sustainability, economic integration, migration governance, and environmental challenges.

Strengthening influence in continental decision-making

Among the newly assigned roles, Morocco will assume the vice-presidency of the African Ministerial Committee for International Candidacies. This committee plays a vital role in coordinating Africa’s collective stance and championing the continent’s nominations within multilateral organizations. For Morocco, this position provides an additional platform to amplify Africa’s voice in global decision-making forums.

The Kingdom will also lead the Bureau for Contributions and Quotas Assessment, a role that, while technical in nature, directly impacts one of the AU’s most pressing concerns: financial autonomy. The issue of member state contributions remains pivotal to strengthening the organization’s financial independence, ensuring predictable funding, and enabling the execution of its strategic programs. These two appointments firmly place Morocco at the heart of the AU’s most transformative discussions.

Policy shaping in justice, economy, and human rights

Morocco’s engagement extends to two specialized technical committees that shape key African public policies. The first focuses on justice and legal affairs, while the second centers on economic development, tourism, trade, industry, and mining. This dual participation highlights the Kingdom’s dedication to addressing the continent’s most pressing challenges.

On the legal front, the AU is working to harmonize regulatory frameworks, strengthen institutional capacities, and foster judicial cooperation among member states. Economically, critical priorities include deepening trade integration, accelerating industrialization, harnessing natural resources, boosting tourism, and diversifying national economies. Morocco’s involvement aligns with its long-standing commitment to fostering pragmatic cooperation, forging strategic partnerships, and building economic bridges across the continent.

Key roles in AU’s permanent representatives committee

The Kingdom’s presence will be further reinforced within the subcommittees of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREP), a cornerstone of the AU’s daily operations. COREP prepares decisions, oversees technical matters, and ensures continuous coordination between member states and AU bodies.

Morocco will assume the vice-presidency of the Subcommittee on Institutional Reforms, a dossier central to the AU’s ongoing efforts to streamline its structures, enhance efficiency, and clarify priorities. Additionally, the Kingdom will chair the Subcommittee on Environmental Issues, a critical responsibility given Africa’s heightened vulnerability to climate change impacts such as droughts, floods, land degradation, and water scarcity.

Morocco will also serve as a member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance, enabling its participation in discussions on institutional strengthening, the rule of law, and African governance mechanisms.

Migration governance: leveraging Morocco’s expertise

Another notable appointment sees Morocco joining the Continental Migration Centre as a board member, with Moroccan experts contributing to its work. This recognition formalizes Morocco’s recognized leadership in African migration governance—a commitment championed at the highest levels of the state.

For years, Morocco has championed an African-centric approach to migration, grounded in solidarity, humanism, and shared responsibility. This vision prioritizes the dignity of migrants, strengthens cooperation among countries of origin, transit, and destination, and links human mobility to development and stability. Morocco’s role within the Continental Migration Centre will further amplify this contribution, sharing a national experience widely regarded as a model in African debates and reinforcing its legitimacy in this strategic policy area within the AU.
