The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared that they have regained the upper hand in areas targeted by clashes with the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in central and southern regions.

In a formal statement, the FAMA confirmed that fighting persisted on Sunday in Anifif, a northeastern locality approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal, following the arrival of additional fighters and equipment dispatched to the MNLA.

The military communiqué emphasized the resilience of Malian troops, stating, “In response to these pressure tactics, our units continued the fight with resolve and discipline throughout the day, demonstrating exceptional courage.” The statement also reaffirmed absolute confidence in the FAMA’s ability to safeguard national unity, protect civilians, and defeat hostile forces.

Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, spokesperson for the MNLA, had earlier claimed control over Anfif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
