The final day of France’s Ligue 1 season was overshadowed by dramatic pitch invasions at two high-profile fixtures, with one match abandoned entirely.

Sunday’s concluding fixtures of the top-flight football season were marred by serious crowd disturbances, as supporters stormed the pitch at both Nantes and Nice. The incidents cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory weekend for French football.

In Nice, ultras breached security barriers late in the game against Metz, forcing riot police to intervene and restore order. But the situation escalated dramatically in Nantes, where the match against Toulouse was brought to an abrupt and chaotic halt.

At the Stade de la Beaujoire, home side Nantes—already relegated to Ligue 2—saw their season finale against Toulouse cut short in the 22nd minute. The game was halted when dozens of supporters, many wearing hoods to conceal their identities, invaded the pitch, prompting players to retreat to the dressing rooms. The match was later abandoned, leaving a bitter taste for all involved.

“This is disgraceful”

Forty minutes after the invasion began, the fixture was officially abandoned. Vahid Halilhodžić, Nantes’ outgoing manager, expressed profound disappointment at the turn of events. This was to be his final match in charge, and what should have been a dignified farewell turned into a painful spectacle.

“This is disgraceful. I wanted to go to the supporters and tell them to stop. I understand their frustration, but not this. I’ve given everything as a coach, as a man. Unfortunately, the reality is bleak,” he stated.

While the French football authorities have yet to issue a public response, the Professional Football League has launched an official investigation. The FC Nantes organization faces significant sanctions, including potential point deductions in next season’s Ligue 2 campaign and possible stadium bans. The club’s future remains uncertain as investigations continue.

Such penalties are not unprecedented. Four years ago, another Ligue 1 side—Saint-Étienne—was handed a six-point deduction before the season even began, following similar misconduct by supporters.
