With fewer than two months remaining before the FIFA World Cup, the absence of Senegal’s defensive stalwart and skipper, Kalidou Koulibaly, has sparked growing unease among fans and pundits alike. The 34-year-old, who boasts 102 international caps and two goals for his nation, has been sidelined due to a persistent thigh injury since early April, leaving his availability for the tournament in serious doubt.

Kalidou Koulibaly, a key figure for both Senegal’s Lions of Teranga and Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, has not featured in a single match for his club since April 8. The setback occurred during a training session, with medical assessments indicating a deep thigh contusion and associated hematoma. Despite the urgency of the situation, no definitive timeline for his return has been provided, adding to the mounting speculation.

al-hilal remains tight-lipped on koulibaly’s return

Al-Hilal’s head coach, Simone Inzaghi, has adopted a cautious stance, emphasizing the need for patience as the club monitors Koulibaly’s progress closely. « We have two injured players, Malcom and Koulibaly. Malcom is back and ready, but Koulibaly suffered a thigh contusion leading to a hematoma. We’re evaluating his condition daily, and his return will hinge on his response to treatment in the coming days », Inzaghi stated during a recent press briefing.

Further details emerged from the club, revealing that Koulibaly underwent a tailored rehabilitation program at the Meena Clinic, located within the club’s headquarters. Additional treatment sessions were deemed necessary following medical examinations in Spain, targeting the anterior thigh muscle. With just six league fixtures remaining for Al-Hilal, the uncertainty surrounding his comeback looms large, especially as Senegal prepares to face France, Norway, and Iraq in Group I of the World Cup.

Koulibaly’s prolonged absence has already forced him to miss critical encounters, including the Africa Cup of Nations final and international friendlies against Peru and Gambia in March. As the countdown to the World Cup intensifies, the question on every Senegalese fan’s mind remains: will the veteran defender recover in time to lead his team onto the global stage?
