Gabon’s marine spatial plan consultations underway

Listen now1 min

The Gabonese government has launched nationwide public consultations to gather input on the National Marine Spatial Plan, a strategic initiative aimed at sustainable ocean governance. Teams from the Ministry of the Blue Economy are currently touring coastal regions, presenting the project’s core objectives and highlighting the nation’s commitment to environmental conservation.

In Port-Gentil, stakeholders from the artisanal fishing sector actively participated in discussions about the local marine zoning proposal. This initiative aligns with the Blue Bonds program, positioning Gabon as a global leader in innovative financing for marine ecosystem preservation.

The consultations aim to establish a collaborative framework for defining protected marine areas. The final zoning plan will then undergo review by decision-making bodies for official endorsement.

This technical endeavor underscores Gabon’s dedication to balancing ecological preservation with socioeconomic development. The plan prioritizes safeguarding critical habitats such as mangroves while ensuring equitable access to marine resources for artisanal fishermen, women fishmongers, and seafood processors—benefiting both present and future generations.

By mid-July, ministry experts will finalize the identification of traditional fishing zones, migratory corridors, and climate-resilient spaces across the Estuary, Nyanga, and Ogooué-Maritime provinces.
