Gabon launches innovation challenge to boost digital economy

Libreville, 14 July 2026 — Gabon is taking a bold step toward bridging the gap between digital innovation and real economic needs. The country’s Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation, in collaboration with the Gabonese Business Federation, has officially unveiled Kimba Connect, marking the first national Open Innovation challenge in Gabon’s history.

This initiative goes beyond a mere competition or public relations campaign. It represents a strategic shift in how Gabonese authorities view innovation: no longer just about nurturing startups for their own sake, but integrating them into the core economic challenges facing local businesses. The goal is clear — transform these young innovators into key partners for national transformation.

Matching businesses with tech solutions

At its core, Kimba Connect operates on a simple yet powerful principle: connecting businesses with concrete challenges to startups with scalable digital solutions. From supply chain optimization and industrial process refinement to financial services, AI, cybersecurity, automation, digital agriculture, and customer experience enhancements — the program opens doors for real-world experimentation and collaboration.

In many of the world’s most competitive economies, open innovation has become a powerful engine of growth. Major corporations no longer build their technological solutions in isolation. Instead, they collaborate with dynamic startup ecosystems that bring speed, flexibility, and fresh perspectives. Gabon is now adopting this model, tailored to its own economic landscape.

A catalyst for economic diversification

The stakes extend far beyond entrepreneurship. Gabon has long sought to diversify its economy, which has historically relied heavily on raw materials and hydrocarbons. Digital innovation is central to this vision. The government aims to foster a knowledge-based economy capable of generating skilled jobs, retaining talent, and attracting international investment.

As stated by Mark-Alexandre Doumba, Minister of Digital Economy, “True innovation only fulfills its potential when it solves real economic problems.” This philosophy defines Kimba Connect: solutions must deliver measurable value — reducing costs, boosting productivity, opening new markets — not just showcase technology for its own sake.

Building national champions through collaboration

The government’s ambition is clear: to cultivate sustainable partnerships between the private sector and local innovators, strengthen the competitiveness of Gabonese enterprises, and accelerate the growth of the country’s digital economy. By supporting tech entrepreneurship and fostering homegrown champions, Gabon is positioning itself not just to adopt global technologies, but to create its own.

In today’s global tech race, digital sovereignty isn’t just about infrastructure or internet coverage. It’s about a nation’s ability to produce its own solutions, platforms, and companies. The countries that thrive tomorrow will be those that turn their creative youth into economic powerhouses. Kimba Connect is Gabon’s answer to this challenge.

The real test now lies in execution. Past initiatives across Africa have often faltered at the pilot stage. Success will depend on whether Kimba Connect can deliver binding contracts, sustained investments, and lasting partnerships between startups and established firms.

If this vision holds, Kimba Connect could evolve from a national contest into a new economic model — one where innovation isn’t a separate sector, but the driving force behind Gabon’s competitiveness and future growth on the African continent.
