Ebola resurgence in DRC’s eastern provinces

An outbreak of the Bundibugyo ebola virus, a rare strain lacking approved vaccines or treatments, has intensified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since mid-May. Initially detected in Ituri Province, the epidemic now extends across multiple eastern regions, including North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo, while also crossing into neighboring Uganda.

Despite the deployment of international aid teams, including Medair and World Vision, the situation remains critical. A recent United Nations assessment, citing World Health Organization data from early August, reveals alarming figures: 3,748 confirmed cases and 1,587 fatalities recorded by July 30—translating to a 44% case fatality rate. The weekly toll has worsened, with 567 new cases and 296 deaths reported in just seven days, marking the highest single-week spike since the outbreak began. Among the victims, 44 healthcare workers have lost their lives, while 151 medical personnel have contracted the virus during the crisis.

Humanitarian response ramps up amid crisis

In response to the escalating threat, humanitarian organizations are scaling up emergency interventions. The International Medical Corps (IMC), collaborating with United Nations agencies, is expanding its operational capacity to tackle the widening outbreak. The surge in cases has overwhelmed local health systems, prompting urgent calls for increased international support to curb further transmission and strengthen containment measures.
