Côte d’Ivoire backs Morocco’s autonomy plan for western Sahara at un seminar

The Government of Côte d’Ivoire has once again expressed its unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative during the recent regional seminar of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C24) held in Managua, Nicaragua.

An initiative backed by global consensus

Ivorian delegates highlighted that Morocco’s proposal, already endorsed by nearly 130 countries including three permanent members of the UN Security Council, aligns with international law and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations. This endorsement was further cemented by the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 in 2025, which recognizes the plan’s viability in addressing the Western Sahara issue.

Empowering local communities through self-governance

The delegation emphasized that the autonomy initiative offers a pragmatic solution by allowing the people of Western Sahara to actively participate in shaping their political and socio-economic future. Through Morocco’s democratic processes, residents elect their local and national representatives in regular elections, ensuring genuine representation and inclusion.

The presence of elected officials from Western Sahara at the C24 seminar was cited as a testament to the initiative’s success in fostering inclusive governance and empowering the region’s inhabitants.

Economic progress and human rights under the autonomy plan

On the economic front, delegates noted the tangible benefits of Morocco’s New Development Model, launched in 2015, which has driven substantial investments in the southern provinces. These efforts have translated into improved living standards and a notable rise in the Human Development Index for Western Sahara, demonstrating the plan’s positive impact on local prosperity.

The delegation also commended Morocco’s commitment to advancing human rights, pointing to the enhanced role of regional commissions under the National Human Rights Council in Laâyoune and Dakhla. Collaboration with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights further underscores the Kingdom’s dedication to transparency and accountability.

A credible path to lasting peace

While praising Morocco’s multifaceted efforts to resolve the regional dispute through compromise, Côte d’Ivoire reiterated that the autonomy initiative stands as a credible and durable solution. By granting the people of Western Sahara significant autonomy and decision-making authority, the plan offers a framework for sustainable peace and development in the region.
