Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms its backing for Morocco’s Sahara autonomy initiative
The Côte d’Ivoire has once again voiced its strong support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal aimed at resolving the longstanding Sahara dispute. This position was clearly articulated during a recent regional seminar of the United Nations’ Special Committee on Decolonization (C24), held in Managua.
The Ivorian delegation highlighted the credibility of this initiative, which has garnered backing from nearly 130 nations worldwide. They emphasized its alignment with international law principles and the relevant United Nations resolutions, particularly the UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025.
Key points of the Moroccan autonomy plan
During the discussions, Ivorian representatives underscored the plan’s potential to empower local populations in the southern provinces through meaningful political and economic participation. They pointed to the regular organization of democratic elections and the active involvement of local representatives in international forums as concrete examples of progress.
The delegation also commended advancements in human rights within the region, particularly through the establishment of regional commissions and enhanced cooperation with relevant UN mechanisms. Simultaneously, concerns were raised about the situation in the Tindouf camps, with a call for a comprehensive population census.
Call for a political solution under UN auspices
The Côte d’Ivoire delegation reiterated its unwavering commitment to a political solution exclusively under the umbrella of the United Nations. They urged all parties involved to embrace compromise and realism to achieve a sustainable and lasting resolution.
