Chad to waive visas for all africans starting 2027

The Republic of Chad is set to revolutionize intra-African travel by eliminating visa requirements for all African citizens beginning January 1, 2027. This landmark decision was unveiled by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno during the opening ceremony of the African Water Forum in N’Djamena, underscoring Chad’s commitment to continental unity and seamless mobility.

Diplomatic breakthrough in the heart of Africa

Against the backdrop of high-level diplomatic gatherings in N’Djamena, where regional leaders and global stakeholders convened for the African Water Forum, Chad emerged as a trailblazer in regional integration. The announcement came as a surprise to many, positioning Chad among the few African nations leading the charge toward borderless travel across the continent.

The historic move reflects the nation’s strategic vision to foster stronger economic, cultural, and social ties with its African neighbors. Speaking at the forum, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno highlighted Chad’s pivotal role as a crossroads of human connections, bridging West and East, North and South.

« Chad stands at the heart of Africa, a land of convergence, unity, and shared destiny. As a cradle of humanity, we are proud to take this bold step toward dismantling barriers and welcoming our African brothers and sisters without restrictions. »

A bold step toward continental integration

This decision places Chad on par with a select group of African countries—including Benin, Togo, Rwanda, Ghana, Gambia, Seychelles, and the Republic of the Congo—that have already abolished visa requirements for African travelers. The reform signals a new era of cooperation and mobility, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision of a united and integrated continent.

By opening its borders, Chad is not only strengthening its diplomatic influence but also boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange across Africa. The move is expected to enhance regional stability and foster deeper economic partnerships, reinforcing the country’s role as a central hub in Central and West Africa.

What this means for travelers

Starting in 2027, African passport holders will be able to enter Chad for tourism, business, or transit without the need for a prior visa. Travelers will only need to present a valid passport upon arrival, streamlining entry procedures and reducing bureaucratic hurdles. This initiative is poised to make Chad a more accessible and attractive destination for millions of Africans.
