The Chadian government formally apologized to magistrates following an extraordinary general assembly of two key judicial unions, signaling a push for institutional cohesion.

Chad government meets with judicial unions

Two prominent Chadian judicial unions, the Magistrates’ Union (SMT) and the National Syndicate of Magistrates (SYAMAT), convened an extraordinary general meeting on May 26, 2026, at the N’Djamena Palace of Justice. Delegates were tasked with monitoring the implementation of resolutions over a ten-day period.

The following day, the Prime Minister engaged in direct discussions with union representatives, joined by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights and the First President of the Supreme Court. In a formal gesture, the Prime Minister extended an official apology on behalf of the government and emphasized the need to foster stronger institutional cohesion.

On May 27, 2026, the unions held separate and joint sessions with the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, as well as the Minister of Public Security and Immigration, again in the presence of the Supreme Court’s First President. These meetings were geared toward reaching a peaceful, mutually agreeable resolution.

The Minister of Public Security also issued a formal apology to the magistrates. The unions acknowledged these apologies and commended the ongoing commitment to dialogue and peace demonstrated by the authorities involved.
