A long-awaited briefing at the UN common house
For the first time since taking office in January, the resident coordinator of the United Nations System in Gabon, Fatou Aminata Lo, sat down with journalists at the UN common house. The meeting served a dual purpose: presenting the 2025 activity report and strengthening the strategic partnership with the media on the road to the Sustainable Development Goals and the upcoming 2028-2032 framework.
How the UN measures its contribution
Flanked by agency heads, Lo framed the engagement in clear terms: “Our contribution is not measured only by the number of projects completed, but also by our ability to bring actors together and support the transformation of public policies into concrete results for the people.”
A $18.5 million envelope: priorities and reach
In 2025, a total of 10.5 billion CFA francs (18.5 million dollars) was mobilized through 21 entities and nearly 300 staff members, 70 percent of whom are nationals. The funding focused on three main areas: promoting good governance and human rights, advancing the transition to a green and blue economy, and fostering equal opportunity and social inclusion.
What journalists wanted to know
During the exchange, reporters raised pointed concerns. They asked about the real role of the UN System and sought clarity on how these programs directly affect people facing pressing socio-economic challenges. It was a frank discussion that set the stage for closer, more transparent collaboration.
Looking ahead to 2028-2032
The meeting also looked beyond 2025, as the UN system prepares its next cooperation framework with Gabon. The dialogue with media is seen as a key part of building accountability and keeping the public informed on progress toward the SDGs.
