The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently stripped the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from Senegal, awarding it to Morocco instead due to incidents that marred the final minutes of the January 18 match in Rabat. This controversial decision has been met with strong opposition from the Teranga Lions.
On Monday, the Senegalese Football Federation officially received the detailed notice and reasoned decision from CAF regarding the title revocation. This step is crucial for Senegal’s formal appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), as reported by RMC Sport.
CAS to deliver swift ruling on Senegal’s appeal
The CAF President has already stated that the final decision rests with the CAS. Although the tribunal has not disclosed its deliberation timeline, a ruling is expected within a few weeks. This urgency stems from the fact that both Senegal and Morocco will have no further recourse for appeal once the verdict is issued.
«The CAS is fully equipped to handle such disputes, leveraging specialized and independent arbitrators,» stated Me Matthieu Reeb, CAS Secretary General, in a recent interview with the mentioned radio station. «We understand the urgency for teams and fans awaiting a resolution, and we are committed to ensuring the arbitration process is expedited while guaranteeing all parties a fair trial.»
