For over two months, the absence of Cameroon’s head of state, Paul Biya, during what authorities describe as a brief private stay in Europe has fueled intense discussions about governance and leadership continuity. At 93 years old, the veteran president’s prolonged absence raises legitimate questions about his ability to carry out his duties, especially as political uncertainties loom following the post-election period.

Government officials have sought to downplay concerns, insisting that Biya continues to govern remotely. They argue that Cameroon’s constitution does not impose any time limits on presidential trips abroad, and insist there is no power vacuum or institutional crisis. According to them, state affairs are being managed without disruption.

Yet these assurances have done little to ease skepticism, particularly from opposition figures. Maurice Kamto’s Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC) has been vocal in demanding greater transparency. The party contends that Cameroonians deserve clarity on the president’s health and capacity to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities. In their view, the secrecy surrounding his European stay only deepens public mistrust rather than dispelling it.

Other critics take a more structural approach. Cabral Libii, leader of the National Council for Resistance (PCRN), suggests that the real issue is not Biya’s absence but the weaknesses in the legal framework governing presidential power. He believes upcoming legislative and municipal elections in early 2027 could serve as a catalyst for much-needed institutional reforms.

With Biya set to begin a new term in under eight months, his continued absence has reignited long-standing debates about governance, succession planning, and the urgent need for transparency at the highest levels of power. Far more than a passing controversy over a presidential trip, this situation exposes the vulnerabilities of a political system that has revolved around one leader for more than four decades.
