Cameroon’s top bishop warns against brutal prison conditions and unlawful detentions

The Archbishop of Douala has raised a stern warning about the deteriorating state of detention facilities across Cameroon. In a recently published pastoral letter on prison conditions, Archbishop Samuel Kleda highlighted alarming concerns over forced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and inhumane treatment of detainees. His message, issued in late June, also underscores the vulnerabilities faced by women and minors within the penal system.

The bishop’s intervention follows a recent apostolic visit by Pope Leo XIV, who called for a renewed focus on human dignity in Cameroon’s correctional institutions. In his letter, Archbishop Kleda echoes this appeal, urging authorities to reform the justice system and ensure that every detainee is treated with fundamental respect.
