The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, along with Deputy Minister Camarade Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabre/Kabore, held a meeting on June 5, 2026 with Dr. Anselme Siméon Sanou, the newly appointed head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Burkina Faso. This high-level discussion focused on aligning the UNODC’s strategic priorities with Burkina Faso’s national security agenda.
The meeting provided Dr. Sanou with an opportunity to outline the key focus areas of his mandate, emphasizing collaboration with Burkina Faso’s diplomatic corps to implement critical UNODC programs aimed at combating organized crime, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and terrorism.
During the talks, Dr. Sanou reaffirmed the UNODC’s commitment to supporting Burkina Faso’s efforts in addressing these pressing security challenges. In response, Minister Traoré commended the new UNODC representative for his deep understanding of the local context—a factor he described as pivotal for effective intervention strategies.
The Foreign Minister also stressed the importance of fostering partnerships between the UNODC and both civil society organizations and government institutions. He underscored Burkina Faso’s readiness to work hand-in-hand with the UNODC to enhance national security and stability.
