Ouagadougou and Belgrade are strengthening their bilateral cooperation, with a focus on defense, security, and training. A high-level Serbian parliamentary delegation led by Slavenko Ristic visited the Burkinabè capital on June 3, 2026, to explore new avenues for partnership.
The meeting between the delegation and Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, along with Deputy Minister Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré, highlighted the mutual commitment to expanding ties between the two nations.

During the discussions, Slavenko Ristic, who also serves as CEO of the Serbian defense technology firm Tehnicki Remont Bratunac, praised Burkina Faso’s strategic direction and the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré. “The vision of the President of Faso resonates strongly in Serbia and commands great respect,” he stated.
Serbia sees Africa as a key player in the future global landscape and is eager to play a more active role on the continent. “Africa is the future, and we want to be part of that future,” Ristic emphasized.
The Burkinabè foreign affairs chief welcomed this initiative, calling it a clear sign of Serbia’s growing interest in Burkina Faso. He also stressed the untapped potential for cooperation between the two countries.
Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré underscored Burkina Faso’s ongoing efforts to diversify its international partnerships, with a particular focus on Eastern European nations. “We are seeking partners who can offer mutually beneficial collaborations,” he noted.
The minister also shared Burkina Faso’s new national vision with his Serbian counterpart, urging Serbia to help bridge understanding between African realities and European policymakers.

In response, Slavenko Ristic pledged to advocate for Burkina Faso and Africa in European decision-making circles, aiming to rebalance cooperation between Europe and African nations.
This meeting marks a significant step in the growing partnership between Ouagadougou and Belgrade, as Burkina Faso actively seeks to expand its strategic alliances beyond traditional partners.
