• Dortmund ends pursuit of El Mala

  Borussia Dortmund has dramatically withdrawn from the race to sign Cologne’s promising prodigy, Said El Mala. This decision follows the rejection of an enormous transfer offer, valued at over €50 million, by their domestic rivals.

  The final proposal was presented to Cologne’s sporting director, Thomas Kessler, by Dortmund executives Lars Ricken and Ole Book in recent days.   Dortmund’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, has publicly confirmed that the club will no longer pursue the talented youngster. He provided a clear statement on the aborted transfer.

  “Said El Mala is not a Borussia Dortmund player and will not become one this summer,” Ricken affirmed. “We engaged in open discussions with 1. FC Köln’s management in recent days, but they ultimately rejected our final offer. Borussia Dortmund will not submit another bid and will not continue to pursue the player’s transfer.”

  While the overall financial package presented by Dortmund was undeniably lucrative, the specific structure of the proposed deal ultimately led to the breakdown in negotiations. The base transfer fee offered by Dortmund was reportedly around €46 million.

  With the inclusion of various performance-related bonuses, the total package could have slightly exceeded Cologne’s €50 million valuation, reaching an estimated €52-53 million. However, Cologne remained thoroughly dissatisfied with the stringent conditions attached to these potential bonus payments.

  The proposed bonuses were structured to be disbursed over a particularly extended period. Furthermore, they were heavily contingent on the player achieving a high number of first-team appearances, which meant Cologne lacked any genuine financial guarantees from these additional clauses.
