Benin welcomes new president Romuald Wadagni after Talon era
Romuald Wadagni was officially sworn in as Benin’s new president on Sunday, May 24, in a ceremony held at the presidential palace in Cotonou. The former finance minister succeeds Patrice Talon after a decade in office.

Benin now has a new leader. Romuald Wadagni, who secured over 94% of the vote in April’s election, took office in a formal ceremony in Cotonou. At 49 years old, the former finance minister begins a seven-year term, which may be extended, following in the footsteps of his political mentor, Patrice Talon.
Economic continuity and security challenges ahead
In his inaugural address, Wadagni paid tribute to his predecessor before pledging to make economic growth ‘visible in the daily lives of citizens.’ As the architect of Benin’s major economic reforms in recent years, he faces pressing challenges, including the growing jihadist threat in the country’s northern regions.
The new president vowed to adopt a ‘firm stance’ against security threats while reinforcing regional cooperation.
Early signs of diplomatic easing
The inauguration also signaled a thaw in relations with neighboring Sahelian countries. Niger, which had maintained strained ties with Benin, sent its Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, who received a warm welcome during the event. Burkina Faso and Mali were also represented by their foreign ministers.
Public and media freedoms will be closely watched in Wadagni’s early decisions, as several NGOs have accused the outgoing administration of tightening political and press restrictions in Benin.
