Benin’s national assembly tackles pivotal legislature this friday

The 10th legislature of the National Assembly of the Bénin convenes for a pivotal plenary session this Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Palais des Gouverneurs in Porto-Novo.

During this session, lawmakers are set to deliberate on critical legislation that will shape the nation’s institutional landscape, public project financing, and the electoral framework governing future elections.

Legislative reforms on the docket

The agenda includes a review of the draft law amending Article 94 of the July 26, 2024, law on the establishment of national orders in Bénin. Additionally, deputies will examine a bill proposing changes to the organic law governing the Economic and Social Council. Notably, this council’s statutes were last revised in March 2026, making this an area of renewed scrutiny.

Economic and cultural initiatives to advance

Another key discussion revolves around a decree authorizing the ratification of a credit agreement signed on June 24, 2025, between the Republic of Bénin and the French Development Agency (AFD). This funding is earmarked for the development of the Cotonou Contemporary Art Museum, a project designed to bolster cultural infrastructure in the capital.

Electoral framework takes center stage

The most anticipated debate concerns the electoral code. Lawmakers will consider a proposal to repeal provisions from Title II of the first book of the electoral code, as amended in 2024. This legislative move could have far-reaching implications for the body responsible for organizing elections, sparking intense discussions among parliamentarians.
