Bénin and Niger pledge strengthened bilateral ties at high-level Niamey meeting
During a landmark visit to Niamey, Presidents Romuald Wadagni of the Bénin and Abdourahamane Tiani of the Niger solidified their commitment to deepen security and economic collaboration between their nations.
The President of the Republic of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, arrived in Niamey on June 2, 2026, for an official friendship and working visit. He was greeted at Diori Hamani International Airport by his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani, in a display of warm hospitality that underscored the strengthening bonds between the two nations.
Following a formal welcome ceremony, the two heads of state held a private meeting at the Presidential Palace in Niamey. This was followed by an expanded working session with delegations from both countries, focusing on shared priorities and regional challenges affecting Bénin and Niger.
The joint communiqué issued at the end of the visit highlighted the deep historical ties of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between Bénin and Niger. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared determination to deepen bilateral relations to meet the aspirations of their citizens for peace, security, and prosperity.
Security cooperation takes center stage
With terrorism persisting across the Sahel and West Africa, security concerns dominated the discussions. Both presidents emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation to combat terrorism and cross-border criminality, stressing that stability is essential for sustainable development in the region.
Economic and cultural bridges to be rebuilt
The leaders agreed to expand collaboration in political, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres. A key outcome was the decision to reopen the Bénin-Niger border, which has been a longstanding barrier to trade and movement. To facilitate this, a joint expert committee has been established to identify challenges and propose solutions within 15 days.
At the conclusion of the visit, President Tiani expressed his appreciation for President Wadagni‘s visit, while Wadagni commended the warm reception. The Bénin leader extended an official invitation to his Nigerien counterpart, which was warmly accepted. Plans for the return visit will be coordinated through diplomatic channels, reflecting the mutual commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
