Algeria gifts 40 MW power plant to Niger to boost energy security

During an official visit to Niamey this Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the Algerian Prime Minister, Sami Grieb, joined his Nigerien counterpart to commission a new 40-megawatt power station. This critical infrastructure is a direct gift from Algeria to Niger.

Diplomatic relations between Algeria and Niger are intensifying rapidly. For the second time in just a few months, Prime Minister Sami Grieb arrived in the Nigerien capital for a high-level working mission. He was welcomed at the airport by the Nigerien Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, before heading to the site of the 40 MW facility that sits at the heart of this visit’s agenda.

Immediately upon his arrival in Niamey, the Algerian head of government inaugurated the plant. With a total capacity of 40 megawatts (MW), the facility was entirely donated by the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. It is designed to inject much-needed electricity into a national grid that has historically suffered from significant deficits.

Megawatt diplomacy addressing the energy crisis

For Niger, a country currently navigating major energy supply hurdles and a phase of industrial restructuring, this Algerian donation is far more than standard development aid. It acts as a vital lifeline for the local economy and the residents of the Niamey region, who are frequently impacted by power outages.

By focusing on the energy sector, Algeria is implementing a pragmatic strategy. This direct technical partnership allows both nations to solidify their bilateral ties through tangible actions, moving beyond traditional regional multilateral frameworks.

“This infrastructure is a testament to the strength of our fraternal bonds and the shared determination of our two countries to build a strategic partnership rooted in concrete achievements,” noted a representative close to the delegations during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Algeria and the Alliance of Sahel States: choosing bilateralism

Furthermore, this second visit by Sami Grieb in such a short period highlights the renewed energy of the AlgeriaNiger axis. While Niger has significantly shifted its regional alliances within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Algeria continues to maintain and deepen direct communication channels with the Nigerien transition authorities.

By investing in pivotal sectors such as energy and hydrocarbons, Algeria reaffirms its goal of remaining a central player in the geopolitical landscape of the Sahel. Through this reinforced partnership with Niger, Algeria demonstrates its ability to sustain influence in the sub-region despite the diplomatic shifts affecting some of its neighbors.

For Niamey, this diversified cooperation provides new tools for economic sovereignty, strengthening essential infrastructure as the country redefines its diplomatic and trade map in West Africa.

Ultimately, this visit underscores the growing alignment between Algeria and Niger, two nations relying on pragmatic cooperation to solve regional economic and energy challenges together.
