Bénin customs seize over 5,500 smuggled phones at Hillacondji border

On the morning of July 12, 2026, Beninese customs officials executed a major operation at the Hillacondji border crossing, intercepting a substantial shipment of illegally imported mobile devices.

A coordinated team of customs agents from the Hillacondji Brigade, led by Captain Fortuné Allagbé, successfully intercepted the shipment before it could enter illicit distribution networks. The operation resulted in the seizure of 5,574 smuggled Android smartphones, marking one of the largest such busts in recent years.

This decisive action underscores the growing commitment of Benin’s customs administration to crack down on cross-border fraud and illegal trade activities.

Zero tolerance for economic sabotage

The scale of this seizure reflects the stringent enforcement measures implemented under the leadership of Director General of Customs, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou Aboudou. The crackdown specifically targets smuggling networks that undermine the country’s economic stability.

The operation’s success was the result of meticulous intelligence gathering and proactive surveillance by customs teams stationed along the border. By intercepting these devices, authorities achieved multiple objectives:

  • Protecting state revenue from financial losses caused by illegal imports.
  • Ensuring fair competition for legitimate businesses operating within Benin’s regulatory framework.
  • Safeguarding formal sector employment linked to the country’s trade economy.

The customs administration continues to reinforce border security measures to prevent similar illicit activities in the future.
