Benin and Nigeria strengthen ties in historic diplomatic visit

The Federal Republic of Nigeria rolled out the red carpet for Benin’s newly elected President, Romuald Wadagni, welcoming him to Lagos on June 1st for his maiden overseas trip following his inauguration.

President Wadagni was greeted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, who personally oversaw the welcoming ceremony at the presidential pavilion.

In an official statement, Benin’s authorities underscored the significance of the gesture, noting that «the solemnity of this reception reflects Nigeria’s strong commitment to the emergence of new Beninese leadership and the renewal momentum it represents».

During his brief stay in Lagos, President Wadagni held high-level discussions with Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The two leaders engaged in frank and forward-looking exchanges on key bilateral cooperation areas—including security, trade, and regional integration—according to Benin’s official channels.

The visit is seen as a pivotal moment in the long-standing interdependent relationship between Benin and Nigeria, a bond that spans decades and encompasses economic, cultural, and strategic dimensions. Beninese officials emphasized that this trip aims to reinforce and redefine the Cotonou-Abuja partnership axis, setting it on a new trajectory.

This diplomatic engagement also signals a shift in Benin’s foreign policy under President Wadagni, who at 49, is championing a proactive neighborhood diplomacy. The approach prioritizes collective West African sovereignty and positions Benin as a key player in fostering regional stability and growth.

Nigeria, the largest economy in West Africa, serves as Benin’s top trading partner. The economic ties are vital for Benin, whose economy—heavily reliant on agriculture and services—depends significantly on its larger neighbor for stability and growth.
