Algeria gifts Chad 40 mw power plant to boost strategic ties

The power plant that Algeria is providing to the Republic of Chad marks a fresh milestone in fortifying relations between Alger and N’Djamena.

On Monday in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside the Prime Minister and head of government of the Republic of Chad, Allamaye Halina, presided over the cornerstone-laying ceremony for this 40-megawatt solidarity power plant between Algeria and Chad.

Sonelgaz International entrusted with building the power plant

This initiative represents another step in deepening ties between Alger and N’Djamena and is part of implementing the high directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The event began with a detailed technical briefing covering various engineering aspects of the project, its implementation stages, and operational prospects, highlighting the facility’s role in strengthening energy cooperation between the two nations.

The power plant project is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, which assigned its execution to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with gas turbines, the plant aims to meet the growing demand for electricity and bolster supply security for the capital N’Djamena and surrounding areas. Charged by the President of the Republic to represent Algeria at this occasion, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb emphasised the strategic significance of the project, presented as one of the first tangible outcomes of commitments made between the leaders of both countries.

Towards a robust strategic partnership

In his address, Ghrieb stressed the special attention President Tebboune pays to strengthening cooperation and solidarity ties with fellow African nations, as well as his personal commitment to supporting Chad’s development efforts, particularly in vital sectors linked to improving citizens’ living conditions. He stated that this achievement “reflects the firm political will uniting the leaders of our two brotherly countries” and materialises the ambition to elevate Algeria-Chad relations “to the level of a solid strategic partnership based on effective solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.”

“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains dedicated to reinforcing fraternal bonds between our two peoples and consolidating bilateral cooperation,” he said, adding that this dynamic contributes to the common goal of building “a more integrated and prosperous African space.” For him, this project is one of the first concrete results of the new momentum generated by the official visit of the Chadian president to Algeria in April 2026. “The important discussions held with his brother, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, led to ambitious agreements and cooperation programmes covering several strategic sectors,” he noted.

When cooperation serves regional stability

The Prime Minister also highlighted the African dimension of this initiative. “This project reflects Algeria’s deep conviction that effective African cooperation can generate shared development through concrete achievements that directly benefit citizens,” he asserted. According to him, “the Africa we believe in is one of active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments, and partnerships that create wealth for African peoples.”

It is worth noting that this vision fits within a broader approach to continental integration. In this regard, Sifi Ghrieb recalled that “Algeria and Chad pay particular attention to major structuring projects.” “The trans-Saharan highway, the fibre-optic interconnection, as well as the strengthening of air transport and logistics, will help open up our interior regions and create new opportunities for trade and investment,” he underlined.

African solutions to African problems

Addressing regional issues, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the convergence of views between Alger and N’Djamena. “We are determined to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and continental matters,” he assured. He added: “This approach reflects our shared belief in the shared destiny of our peoples and the need to promote African solutions to African problems while respecting state sovereignty.”

For this reason, Ghrieb reiterated Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad in its development efforts. “On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s unwavering commitment to support the Republic of Chad and strengthen bilateral partnership in the service of development, stability, and prosperity for both our countries,” he declared.
