The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Gender Development Centre has joined forces with UN Women and key ECOWAS agencies to launch a groundbreaking regional initiative in Côte d’Ivoire. This two-day workshop, held in Abidjan on May 15-16, 2026, marked the official validation of an integrated program addressing gender equality, climate resilience, and green economic transition across West Africa.
strategic framework to empower women and youth
The newly endorsed program aims to strengthen regional efforts in addressing the most pressing priorities of ECOWAS member states. Its core objectives include bolstering gender mainstreaming in climate policies, securing funding for the ECOWAS Gender and Climate Action Plan, and creating tangible economic opportunities for women and young people across the region.
key voices highlight transformative potential
Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre, emphasized that the green transition presents both challenges and unprecedented opportunities for women and girls in West Africa. She noted that this initiative could redefine economic participation and leadership roles for women in traditionally male-dominated sectors.
Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, described the program as a critical shift from political rhetoric to concrete action. She stressed that this framework would enable West African nations to tackle climate change while building inclusive economies that leave no one behind.
Dr. Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the importance of an inclusive green transition. He called for policies that create real opportunities for women and youth, ensuring they become active participants in the region’s sustainable economic future.
roadmap to implementation
The finalized program document will be formally adopted during a working session scheduled for June 29 to July 6, 2026, in Lomé, Togo. This gathering will bring together policymakers, development partners, and civil society representatives to finalize implementation strategies and establish monitoring mechanisms for the initiative’s success.
