Togo universities align unesco chairs to boost national development

How can university research better address the nation’s most pressing needs? That central question brought together leaders of Togo’s UNESCO academic chairs in Lomé on July 9, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the gathering provided a platform to assess ongoing initiatives and outline a fresh strategic roadmap aimed at amplifying the impact of academic research on the country’s progress.

uniting academia to shape the country’s future

Under the leadership of the Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Gado Tchangbedji, the session convened the National Commission for UNESCO and heads of all UNESCO-endorsed chairs operating within Togo’s public universities. The discussion centered on strengthening collaboration and identifying actionable pathways to translate research outcomes into tangible benefits for Togolese society.

The meeting highlighted the work of several leading chairs, including:

  • The UNESCO Chair in Renewable Energies at the University of Lomé,
  • The UNESCO Chair on Women, Science and Sustainable Water Management in West Africa, also based in Lomé, and
  • The UNESCO Chair on ICT and Higher Education Development in West Africa, hosted by the University of Kara.

research as a catalyst for national progress

Participants reviewed each chair’s mandate, completed projects, operational challenges, and contributions to public policy. The shared vision is to deepen the role of these academic structures in tackling Togo’s major challenges—such as energy transition, sustainable water resource management, gender equality, and digital transformation in higher education.

towards stronger collaboration and shared platforms

The discussions yielded practical recommendations to enhance the UNESCO chair network. A key proposal is the creation of a joint digital platform linking the National Commission for UNESCO with the chairs. This tool is expected to streamline knowledge sharing, synchronize activities, and foster joint initiatives across institutions.

The recommendations also emphasized improving coordination between academic institutions and securing additional technical and financial partners to support research projects that align with national priorities.

government urges research with tangible outcomes

Closing the event, Professor Gado Tchangbedji urged chair leaders to align their programs with Togo’s development priorities. He stressed that scientific research must deliver concrete results capable of informing public policy and propelling economic and social change. The minister also expressed hope that this dialogue would mark the beginning of a stronger, more synergistic higher education ecosystem in Togo.

building a more influential research ecosystem

This meeting reflects the government’s commitment to harnessing the scientific talent within the nation’s universities. By strengthening connections between UNESCO chairs, expanding partnerships, and aligning research efforts with local needs, Togo is positioning itself to solidify its scientific ecosystem and amplify the contribution of higher education to sustainable development.

The dialogue signals the potential start of a more structured, collaborative approach among researchers, universities, and national institutions—one that positions academic innovation as a true driver of growth and progress.
