During the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, met with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the APU’s Executive Committee. The high-level discussion took place on June 4 and centered on the institution’s evolving role and strategic direction amid Africa’s mounting challenges.
Sonko outlined several proposals to enhance the effectiveness of the APU, emphasizing the urgent need for institutional reforms. His key recommendation called for a restructuring of the union’s operational framework to amplify its influence on the continent’s political and institutional agendas. The Senegalese parliamentary leader argued that streamlining decision-making processes within the APU could yield greater clarity and impact in its policy recommendations.
Another focal point of the meeting was the alignment between the APU’s resolutions and those of the African Union (AU). Sonko stressed that closer coordination between these bodies would ensure more cohesive governance and synchronized policy implementation across Africa. By fostering stronger ties between continental institutions, he believes the APU can play a more decisive role in shaping Africa’s future trajectory.
