Sonko addresses tensions after leaving Senegal government

After his departure from the government and the formation of a new cabinet excluding his party, PASTEF, Ousmane Sonko has broken his silence. The leader addressed the media with a series of pointed remarks directed at President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, though he emphasized that the current disagreements do not signal a personal rift between the two.

Reflecting on their evolving relationship, Sonko highlighted a troubling communication gap with the head of state. « The President refused to speak with me, even as he engaged in dialogue with others, » he stated firmly.

Discussing PASTEF’s exclusion from the new government, Sonko underscored the long-standing political alliance between his movement and the administration. « We were once side by side; today, the President stands on the opposite side, » he declared, using a local proverb to illustrate the shift in dynamics.

Despite the evident strain, Sonko insisted that tensions had not escalated into direct confrontation. « We have never exchanged harsh words face to face, » he affirmed. His tone balanced criticism with a call for collective focus, stressing that his party does not view itself as an opponent of the President.

« Our true adversaries are not in this government, » Sonko asserted. « The soaring cost of living, unreliable transport, and the daily struggles of Senegalese citizens are what demand our attention. » He warned that opportunistic forces within the opposition were attempting to amplify divisions within the executive branch.

The remarks come at a pivotal moment, as political observers dissect the implications for the future of cooperation—or conflict—between Ousmane Sonko, PASTEF, and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
