Algeria’s Sonelgaz begins groundwork for 40 MW energy facility in Tchad
A high-level delegation from Sonelgaz, Algeria’s state-owned energy giant, has arrived in N’Djamena to kick off preparatory work for the construction of a 40 MW power plant in the Republic of Tchad. The initiative aligns with recent policy directives from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has emphasized strengthening African energy partnerships and deepening South-South cooperation—particularly with Tchad, following an official state visit by Tchadian leader Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Algeria between April 22 and 24.
The Algerian delegation, led by Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz International, met with key Tchadian officials including the Director General of Tchad-Elec, the Algerian Ambassador to Tchad, and representatives from the Tchadian Ministry of Energy. The group also held high-level discussions with Tchad’s Minister of State for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, and the Minister of Water and Energy, Passalé Kanabé Marcelin.
The meetings underscored “the strategic importance of this project in strengthening economic and energy ties between Algeria and Tchad”, according to an official statement. The delegation proceeded with a technical working session alongside Tchad-Elec’s leadership to review project logistics, regulatory requirements, and establish clear priorities for the preparatory phase. Key topics included defining a joint roadmap, setting up bilateral task forces, and coordinating field operations to ensure seamless collaboration among all stakeholders.
Technical assessments and next steps
During their mission, the Sonelgaz team will conduct on-site evaluations to assess existing infrastructure, assess grid connection feasibility, and verify compliance with national and international technical standards. These preliminary studies are essential before initiating construction, ensuring the project meets top-tier quality and efficiency benchmarks.
The initiative reflects “the shared commitment of Algeria and Tchad to build a sustainable energy partnership” and highlights Sonelgaz’s dedication to supporting African development through knowledge transfer, technical capacity building, and practical solutions tailored to the continent’s energy needs.
This infrastructure project is expected to significantly boost Tchad’s electricity generation capacity, supporting industrial growth, improving energy access for households, and fostering long-term economic resilience in the region.
