On July 3, 2026, coinciding with World No Plastic Bag Day, SOLIBRA officially unveiled its ECO BOX project. This new initiative aims to intensify efforts against plastic pollution and foster a sustainable circular economy within the Treichville commune of Côte d’Ivoire.
Treichville was specifically chosen for this endeavor due to the significant daily volumes of plastic waste it generates. These discarded materials frequently clog drainage systems and compromise vital sanitation infrastructure. The ECO BOX program seeks to address this challenge head-on by converting these plastic pollutants into valuable, reusable resources through a carefully structured collection and recycling framework.
This ambitious project is built upon a collaborative partnership involving SOLIBRA, the Treichville J’Adore Foundation, and BIRWAST, a company specializing in plastic waste recycling. This powerful synergy is designed to elevate waste management practices, safeguard the urban environment, and cultivate fresh economic avenues for local residents.
To facilitate the immediate commencement of operations, essential equipment has been supplied to the field teams. This includes six wheelbarrows, a dedicated collection tricycle, eighty garbage bags, twelve rakes, alongside gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms.
Through the ECO BOX initiative, the collaborating partners are committed to achieving a range of crucial objectives. These include the gradual removal of plastic waste from drainage systems to mitigate flood risks, the generation of employment opportunities for local youth as collection agents and drivers, and the significant valorization of collected plastics through comprehensive recycling processes.
A key component of the project also focuses on community engagement and public awareness. Collection agents will undertake the vital task of educating residents, encouraging them to adopt proper waste sorting habits, and cultivating a widespread culture of cleanliness throughout the commune.
The official launch ceremony culminated with a ribbon-cutting, formally inaugurating the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the presentation of keys for the first collection tricycle to one of the agents, who will now traverse the streets of Treichville, diligently gathering plastic waste.
