Senegal’s pastef rules out cabinet roles in new government

Just days after Ousmane Sonko was removed from the Prime Minister’s post and a new government was sworn in, tensions between the leader of Pastef-Les Patriotes and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have intensified. Initial negotiations were underway to explore how senior members of the party could join the executive branch, but those talks have now collapsed. In an official statement released on June 1 by Pastef’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on his Facebook page, the party declared it would not be nominating any of its officials to serve in the upcoming cabinet.

According to the communiqué, multiple rounds of discussions took place in recent days between Pastef leaders and the Head of State to reach a compromise on the new government’s makeup. The party emphasized it had acted “in a spirit of responsibility” and in line with its governing bodies’ directives. A lengthy meeting was held on June 1 between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko, during which some common ground was identified. Yet fundamental disagreements remained over the role and influence of the majority bloc within the executive framework.

Ongoing disputes over executive power

After the meeting, the COMEX reconvened to assess the situation. Fresh proposals were reportedly submitted to the President, but they were not accepted. Faced with this deadlock, Pastef has withdrawn entirely from the government formation process. “Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government and will not be represented by any minister,” the statement confirmed.

This move could significantly reshape Senegal’s political landscape, especially as citizens face mounting economic and social pressures. Despite the breakdown in talks, Pastef wished “every success to the new team,” signaling its intention to continue operating from the National Assembly, where Sonko now holds the presidency. The coming days will reveal the true impact of this political turning point at the highest levels of Senegalese governance.
