Senegal unveils new government without ousmane sonko’s pastef party

Le Premier ministre sénégalais Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô

Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô of Senegal revealed the composition of a new 30-member government on Monday evening. Notably, the cabinet does not include representatives from the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite its majority presence in the National Assembly.

This executive reshuffle unfolds amidst a broader national political restructuring in Senegal, seeing the integration of various technocratic and political figures into the new team. Hours before the official list was made public, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had stated that members of his political formation would not be joining this new government.

Outlining the new team’s strategic direction, the Senegalese Prime Minister characterized it as a « government of mission and obligation of results ». He emphasized its dual foundation of political and technocratic expertise, while also ensuring significant representation for both youth and women, reflecting a commitment to inclusive African governance.

He further elaborated that the government’s approach would feature a methodological shift, prioritizing institutional coherence and the mobilization of national competencies, including those from the diaspora. This marks a significant development in current African affairs.

The new cabinet configuration sees the reappointment of several key ministers from the previous administration. These include Cheikh Diba for Economy, Cheikh Niane for Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye for Hydraulics and Sanitation, and Moustapha Guirassy for National Education.

Additionally, other Senegalese officials retaining their portfolios are Ibrahima Sy in Health, Moussa Bala Fofana in Urbanism, Yankhoba Diémé in Armed Forces, Déthié Fall in Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr in Communication.

This cabinet restructuring follows President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s decision on May 26 to appoint Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister. Lô assumes the role from Ousmane Sonko, who has since been elected to lead the Senegalese National Assembly.
