Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has directed all relevant ministers to implement urgent measures to mitigate flood risks before the upcoming rainy season begins. During Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, the head of government emphasized the need for stronger preparedness to address potential hazards during the hivernage period.
Government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye confirmed that several critical steps must be executed without delay. Among these, the pre-positioning of emergency resources and the organization of a cross-ministerial simulation drill by June 15, 2026, are prioritized to assess the State’s response capabilities in the face of possible disasters.
Ongoing initiatives already underway include clearing drainage systems, inspecting flood control structures, deploying additional water pumps, and developing contingency plans for high-risk areas. Sonko stressed the importance of seamless inter-agency collaboration, with the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation leading coordination efforts in partnership with the Ministry of the Interior for civil protection and crisis management.
