Senegal political tensions rise over new justice minister appointment

Fresh political tensions are emerging in Senegal following the announcement of the new government’s composition, with opposition leader Ousmane Sonko raising serious concerns about the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Minister of Justice.

Senegal government shake-up sparks debate over judicial reforms

The opposition leader, whose party Pastef has been involved in prolonged legal disputes with state institutions, expressed skepticism about Me Moussa Sarr’s selection as Garde des Sceaux. Sonko argues that the new Justice Minister’s past involvement in contentious legal cases raises red flags for his party’s stance on judicial independence and accountability.

Speaking publicly, he emphasized that Pastef remains unconvinced by the appointment, stating, « The lineup for the Justice Ministry does not inspire confidence. He is a figure who has been deeply involved in several sensitive legal cases that have strained relations between our party and certain courts. »

While Sonko has adopted a cautious approach—pledging to assess the new minister’s actions before drawing final conclusions—his party’s unease is palpable. Pastef has signaled its intention to monitor the Justice Ministry’s actions closely, particularly through its parliamentary representatives.

Prime Minister under scrutiny

The political fallout extends beyond the Justice portfolio. Ousmane Sonko also directed sharp criticism at Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, accusing him of straying from his stated technocratic role into political maneuvering.

« I would like to remind the Prime Minister to adhere strictly to his technocratic mandate, » Sonko remarked. « He was appointed to manage state affairs professionally—not to engage in political games. » The opposition leader went on to warn that he is fully informed about the Prime Minister’s activities and urged restraint to avoid escalating tensions.

Internal party dissent surfaces

The government reshuffle has not only drawn external criticism but also exposed divisions within Pastef. Several party members who accepted positions in the new administration are now facing scrutiny from Sonko, who accused them of acting without consulting the party’s leadership.

Among those singled out are Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé. Sonko declared, « Those who have joined the government did so on their own accord. When the time comes, we will address their actions. »

The unfolding developments highlight the fragile balance of power in Senegal’s political landscape, with the new cabinet’s legitimacy already under intense debate.
