The Diomaye Président coalition has sharply criticized the recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko during the inauguration of the Pastef party headquarters in Mbacké. Coalition leaders argue that his comments were not only disrespectful to the Head of State but also undermined the principle of institutional responsibility expected from a senior official.
Bassirou Dieng, a prominent figure in the coalition, emphasized that such rhetoric is incompatible with the foundations of a rule of law and a functioning democracy. « In any credible democracy or republic, it is unacceptable for a National Assembly president to make derogatory remarks about the President of the Republic, » he stated in an interview. He went on to highlight the widespread backlash his statements have provoked, noting that public opinion across Senegal has overwhelmingly condemned Sonko’s remarks.
According to coalition sources, the political fallout from Sonko’s speech has dominated discussions both on social media and in mainstream media outlets. « Since his address yesterday in Mbacké, reactions have poured in from every corner of the country. Almost no one agrees with his comments, and there is a unanimous rejection of his inflammatory statements, » Bassirou Dieng remarked, urging Sonko to exercise restraint in his public communications.
The coalition has warned that it will no longer tolerate what it views as repeated attacks on Senegal’s institutions. « The Diomaye Président coalition will take a firm stance moving forward, » Dieng declared. « We will no longer turn a blind eye to Ousmane Sonko’s disrespectful remarks, whether directed at the President of the Republic or other representatives of the State. »
This strong response follows the immediate aftermath of Sonko’s controversial statements in Mbacké, which reignited political debates and drew sharp reactions from within the presidential majority.
