Senegal assembly speaker sets deadline for constitutional reform

The Senegalese National Assembly has adopted a packed legislative agenda following this week’s Conference of Presidents, with key labor and social security codes slated for commission review tomorrow and plenary debate by Monday. Yet all eyes remain fixed on the constitutional revision proposal, which has taken center stage in political discussions.

Dakar — As the legislative body intensifies its workload, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, has taken a firm stance on the constitutional amendment process. During a meeting with the Bureau members, he disclosed that the presidency has yet to provide the mandatory feedback on the proposal submitted weeks ago, despite formal requests from the legislative branch.

In response to this delay, Sonko has set a firm deadline of next Monday for the Executive to respond. Should no reply be received by then, the Assembly’s Bureau will convene immediately to advance the legislative procedure, regardless of presidential position. The Speaker emphasized his determination to see the constitutional reform debated and voted on before the current ordinary session concludes.

Beyond the constitutional matter, Sonko also highlighted the legislature’s long-standing expectation for two critical financial documents—the revised Finance Bill and the Budget Orientation Debate paper—both reportedly approved in Council of Ministers sessions months ago. The pressure is now mounting between the Legislative and Executive branches over these pending submissions.
