Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko meets Dakar archbishop ahead of Popenguine 2026 pilgrimage

With the 138th edition of the Popenguine Marian pilgrimage just days away, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko paid a courtesy visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Victories in Dakar.

A warm and respectful atmosphere greeted the head of government as he was received by Monseigneur André Guèye, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Dakar.

Accompanying the Prime Minister were Marie Rose Faye, the government spokesperson, and Béatrice Germaine Faye, a member of parliament.

Key discussions focus on national cohesion

The meeting centered on themes of social peace, national unity, and interfaith dialogue—particularly relevant ahead of the upcoming religious gathering in Popenguine.

Ousmane Sonko underscored the State’s commitment to Senegal’s long-standing values of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and communal living. He also praised the vital role of religious leaders in maintaining social stability and national cohesion.

In response, Monseigneur André Guèye conveyed his satisfaction with the visit and offered prayers for peace, national harmony, and the success of ongoing developmental initiatives across the country.

This exchange comes amid growing anticipation for the Popenguine Marian pilgrimage, widely regarded as one of Senegal’s most significant religious events.
