Following a Champions League match, a significant public disturbance unfolded in Besançon, commencing near the Pont Robert Schwint. Approximately fifty individuals initiated the unrest by blocking traffic, subsequently confronting law enforcement officers who arrived on the scene. The majority of those involved were minors, who proceeded to hurl projectiles at the police, resulting in minor injuries to five officers. Motorists caught in the gridlock also witnessed young people climbing onto their vehicles, with at least one car sustaining damage. The group then moved towards the city center, concentrating around Place de la Révolution.

The disorder extended into several city streets, including Grande rue, Battant, and rue Courbet, where tear gas was deployed. This led to a chaotic situation where numerous pedestrians and patrons enjoying outdoor terraces sought refuge, with local restaurateurs providing shelter from the gas. Residents also reported damage to their electric bicycles, which were overturned, and various pieces of urban furniture were defaced or destroyed.

mayor of besançon condemns the violence

Ludovic Fagaut, the mayor of Besançon, swiftly condemned the acts of violence via social media. He emphasized that “nothing can justify exploiting a popular sporting event to cause destruction, disrupt public order, and foster a sense of insecurity.” The mayor affirmed that efforts are actively underway to identify the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice.

As the situation escalated, CRS units were deployed to the area. While between 600 and 800 people were observed moving through the city after the match, a core group of up to one hundred young individuals became increasingly aggressive, with about fifty directly clashing with police forces.

In the immediate aftermath, five individuals have been taken into custody. Among them are four minors and one adult.
