Olympique Lyonnais’s request for Toulouse match postponement denied by LFP

Olympique Lyonnais is set to kick off their Ligue 1 campaign on August 22 with an away fixture against Toulouse. The club recently approached the Ligue de football professionnel, seeking to reschedule this crucial opening match. Their rationale stemmed from the potential for this fixture to fall directly between the two legs of a critical UEFA Champions League playoff, should OL successfully advance to that stage.

For the Lyon management, this presented a compelling argument, prompting them to formally submit their request to the LFP via official correspondence.

To bolster their case, Olympique Lyonnais invoked what they termed “PSG jurisprudence,” highlighting instances where Paris Saint-Germain had previously received fixture adjustments to better prepare for significant European commitments. OL contended that accommodating their request would serve the broader interests of French football on the continental stage.

Potential Champions League Playoff Amidst Ligue 1 Fixtures for OL

Given these precedents and a belief in sporting equity, the seven-time French champions confidently anticipated a favorable decision from the League’s governing body.

However, in an unexpected turn, the administrative council of the Ligue de football professionnel ultimately rejected Olympique Lyonnais’s proposal. The League cited its reluctance to disrupt the meticulously planned Ligue 1 televised schedule, particularly so early in the season, as the primary reason for denying the postponement.

This decision marks an initial calendar challenge for Paulo Fonseca‘s squad. The Gones will now face a demanding late August period, requiring immense effort to navigate their domestic commitments while simultaneously pursuing a coveted spot in the UEFA Champions League.
